Keep Them Wild

The Canary Islands are wild and full of natural life—qualities that define their beauty and make them unlike anywhere else. Nueva Pescanova is putting it all under threat by wanting to build the world’s first octopus factory farm.

Say NO to a corporate octopus farm in the Canary Islands. Sign the petition to keep the islands’ environment, and the octopus, wild.

Tell The Canary Islands Government To Reject The Harmful Octopus Farm

Petition text:

Nueva Pescanova’s octopus factory farm will hurt the Canary Islands. It could harm the people, the economy, and this beautiful environment.

  1. An octopus farm risks undermining people’s health, hurting local businesses, polluting the air, water and resources. It could also harm the plants and animals that make the island so special, and worsen the impacts of climate change here at home.

  2. An octopus factory farm would be bad for the island and horrific for octopuses. They are intelligent and sensitive creatures that can recognise faces, use tools, and even dream. In factory farms, they are confined to tanks and subjected to conditions that cause extreme suffering.

Octopus farming doesn’t belong on the islands. It puts the people, the environment, and this way of life at risk.  We, the undersigned, call on the Canary Islands government to stop the octopus farm now to protect our health, our local economy, and our pristine environment. Say NO to corporate exploitation and keep the islands and octopus wild.

Get The Facts: An Octopus Factory Will Hurt The Canary Islands

Nueva Pescanova, a multinational seafood corporation, plans to build the world’s first octopus factory farm at Port Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in the Canary Islands—threatening public health, the local economy, and the irreplaceable beauty of the islands.

While the corporation will profit, the Canary Islands and octopuses will suffer. The farm could:

  • Pollute the air and water, deplete already limited resources, harm fragile ecosystems, and contribute to climate change. Read the report
  • Increase health risks for Canary Island residents and consumers of the octopus products from improper waste management and pollution. Nueva Pescanova didn't submit water analyses for human consumption, risking food safety. The Canary Islands Public Health Directorate issued a negative report. Read the report
  • Bring no significant economic benefit to the islands, creating only a few hundred jobs or fewer, while hurting local businesses and treasured protected areas. Read the report
  • Cause extreme suffering for octopuses. Nueva Pescanova will slaughter the octopuses by ice slurry submersion—a practice that is being phased out across the aquaculture sector due to the slow, painful, and stressful death it causes. Read the report
