Why we need to Stop Octopus Farming, before it starts

Octopuses are highly inquisitive and intelligent wild animals who belong in the ocean, not in tanks on factory farms. Plans by Nueva Pescanova to open the world’s first commercial octopus farm in Spain put these incredible creatures at risk of unimaginable suffering.

To learn about why we need to stop octopus farming, read Compassion in World Farming’s Octopus Factory Farming: A Recipe for Disaster and their latest reports.

What will happen if the farm opens?

  • Octopuses are wild, naturally solitary creatures who are unsuited to captivity. Confining them can trigger aggression and even cannibalism.
  • Nueva Pescanova's proposed farm will rear approximately one million octopuses annually, with plans revealing inhumane practices such as the use of ice slurry for slaughter—an agonising method recognised by scientists for its cruelty.
  • Farming octopuses is not only inhumane but also unsustainable. The practice requires feeding them wild-caught fish, contributing to overfishing and exacerbating food insecurities in vulnerable communities worldwide.

Many scientists, experts, and organisations have already spoken out, raising concerns over the ethical and environmental consequences of the planned farm.

It’s shocking that governments around the world are spending public funds on research to develop something as cruel and environmentally damaging as octopus farming. This must be stopped.
